153rd anniversary of Juneteenth

Today marks the 153rd anniversary of the official end to slavery in America, also known as Juneteenth.

On this day, Major General Gordon went to Galveston, Texas to alert the community President Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves two years earlier. Although it is not a national holiday, some Americans still take time to celebrate the end of slavery. The City of Biloxi celebrated Juneteenth last Saturday at the Biloxi Civic Center.

Workers at the local radio station JZ 94.5 tell News 25 Juneteenth is an important piece of history that set the tone for equal rights and opportunities for the future. JZ 94.5 News Director Rowe Evans said, “That spirit is what motivates or motivated people to start the Civil Rights movement. It’s a different kind of fight, but it’s still a fight.”

JZ 94.5 Producer Alanderia Whitlock said, “It’s kind of like a ripple effect. You pull back from your ancestors and the people that were there before you and see how they fought for what they believe in. You see how that makes a difference. It’s important that we do the same for the people behind us.”

President Trump’s press secretary released a statement on his behalf Tuesday saying that we would “never forget the millions of African-Americans who suffered the evils of slavery.”
