18 wheeler turns over, closes on ramp near Canal Road
This morning in Harrison County, an 18 wheeler flipped onto its side, shutting down the westbound on-ramp at Canal Road and I-10.
The truck was Louisiana bound, carrying 42,000 pounds of sodium bromide, a chemical commonly used in swimming pools. The trailer’s load shifted when the driver was pulling onto the on-ramp, causing the truck to flip.
While there didn’t appear to be any leakage or spills, the on-ramp remained closed during a thorough investigation of the scene. The driver was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries.
Harrison County Fire Services Chief Pat Sullivan said, “This is not a placard truck, meaning that there’s no hazardous materials in itself, it’s contained. There’s no leakage, all the products stayed within the truck. Initially we got the report of an 18 wheeler on its side, we didn’t know what the product was, what the hazards were. So, we treat it as a hazmat incident, we shut down the on-ramp to protect the public and to help us to do the investigation into if there’s anything leaking.”
Mississippi Highway Patrol, Harrison County, and Gulfport Fire, along with MDEQ and several other agencies responded to the accident.
