Vandalized figure of Jesus returned, statue of Virgin Mary still missing from St. James Cemetery
News 25 reported an incident of vandalism and theft at St. James Catholic Church Cemetery in Gulfport. That very same day, an important figure that was stolen was returned, but a piece is still missing.
Two weeks ago, a St. James Catholic Church parishioner reported the church cemetery was vandalized and a figure of Jesus crucified was stolen along with a new fiberglass statue of the Virgin Mary.
But a plea to the public Sunday that aired on WXXV led to a bittersweet and faithful return home. Father Ryan McCoy said, “WXXV was very nice to run a story on the vandalism about the crucifix. Immediately that day, Deacon Joe Kidd from First Missionary Baptist Church, close to St. James Cemetery, saw the news story on WXXV and recognized the body of Jesus that was left at his doorstep. He didn’t know where it was from.”
The statue of the Virgin Mary is still missing. Father Ryan McCoy says the century-old figure and the Crucifix were desecrated when it was pried away from the cross and both arms were broken off. Father Ryan says it is a heartbreaking sight that also leaves him hopeful. “This crucifix represents resiliency because it’s in a lot of pictures from Hurricane Katrina with an artist who draped an American flag over it and with the damage of the trees behind it as a symbol that our faith cannot be destroyed. So, it’s a very strong symbol of our community by resiliency and the face of struggles.”
Father Ryan says it is that resiliency and divine intervention that led to the fateful return. “I’m so grateful for Deacon Joe Kidd and for him getting in touch with us and returning it. God is truly showing the community that he’s taking care of us.”
