Mississippi Bicentennial Celebration
On December 10th of this year, Mississippi will turn 200 years old. State leaders are planning a year-long celebration.
This afternoon, Lieutenant Governor Tate Reeves and House Speaker Philip Gunn laid out some of those plans at the state capitol. There will be three major bicentennial events: one in Oxford, one in Jackson, and one in Gulfport at Centennial Plaza. In addition to those major events, there will be a number of community gatherings across the state.
State leaders say this is a time for Mississippians to be proud and celebrate where they live. Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves said, “I believe strongly that in many instances, we need to stop apologizing and start bragging about Mississippi’s many great accomplishments. I think this celebration of our bicentennial is an opportunity to do just that.”
