The sport of pickleball is gaining popularity on the Gulf Coast
The sport pickleball was first introduced to Mississippi in 2012 and has grown tremendously in popularity ever since.
The courts at the Popps Ferry Recreation Complex were filled with pickleball players. Many knew nothing about the sport before picking up the paddle and now they can’t stop playing. Popps Ferry Recreation Center Coach Larry Kimbrough said, “I had no clue about what the game was about and I went out and bought a paddle the next day. That’s how much fun it is.”
Harrison County USAP Ambassador Vicki Collier said, “I saw these courts being transformed from tennis courts into pickleball courts and since then we’ve had hundreds of players. We have a league that grew from 30 to 90. The growth has been unbelievable.”
The great thing about pickleball is that is can be played by people of all ages. All you need to get start is the pickleball and the paddle. Harrison County USAP Ambassador Andrea Robertson said, “It’s very inexpensive and it’s free. All of the lessons are free out here. Coach Larry teaches clinics Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 10.”
Not only does pickleball offer aerobic exercise, but on the court, it is easy for players to form new friendships. “It’s unlike any other sport that there is. It’s the social welcoming aspects of it that hooks people. It’s addictive and you’ll get addicted.”
Whether it’s for mental or physical health or just to have fun, players will tell you pickleball is a hit.
