Republican Chris McDaniel speaks out on candidacy
Mississippi Republican Chris McDaniel is challenging incumbent Senator Roger Wicker in the GOP primary race. This afternoon, the announcement was made in his hometown of Ellisville at Jones County Junior College.
“Donald Trump told us he wanted to drain the swamp and I’m going to go there to help him drain the swamp.” These were Mississippi Senator Chris McDaniel’s last words just before displaying his campaign sign, symbolizing the Republican challenger’s official entrance into the GOP primary race against Senator Roger Wicker. “Mississippi has always remained dead last. It’s time for a new approach, a new change and a good place to start is less government, less intervention.”
McDaniel’s long awaited challenge comes after a close loss in a highly competitive 2014 race against Senator Thad Cochran. Mcdaniel tells News 25 he has big plans if he wins the election. “I want to see term limits pass. Secondly, I want to make darn sure that we have real tax reform, real across the board tax relief for every American. I want to make sure Obamacare is repealed.”
In a room packed with supporters in McDaniel’s hometown of Ellisville, the familiar Mississippi challenger told the crowd he was up for a fight, calling out his opponent Wicker as “one of the most liberal senators.” “Roger Wicker has voted for every single spending bill put before him, including every single one during Barack Obama’s administration.”
McDaniel says we can expect a heated race, similar to the one in 2014. News 25 asked him what he plans to do differently this time. Here is what he had to say: “What we’re going to do is stick to the issues, having the debate about all the issues, not all the other junk, just the issues. We believe that people will elect the most conservative candidate and that’s me.”
McDaniel’s announcement comes a day after President Trump’s tweet endorsing Wicker on Tuesday. The Republican Primary in Mississippi is set for June 5th.
