Mississippi Bicentennial Celebration

2017 marks the 200th anniversary of statehood for Mississippi. The Coast is set to kick off the bicentennial celebration.
Officials gathered at Centennial Plaza this afternoon to announce various events planned for March 31st through April 1st. The two day celebration features events like ‘Salute to Mississippi’ which highlights the state’s heritage, history, and military background and ‘Taste of Mississippi’ which celebrates the Magnolia State’s cuisine.
The weekend offers non-stop entertainment for all ages and is free to the public. Gulfport Mayor Billy Hewes said, “This kick off is for all of South Mississippi, really anyone who wants to come. We’re going to be observing the entire year of 2017 with the final celebration with the opening of the museums up in Jackson, but we’re kicking it off in South Mississippi. It’ll be a great start for the spring and just a great look back for us.”
The celebration will start at 9 a.m. on Friday March 31st. For more information visit www.ms200south.org.
