USM Picks up Last Second Signee from Gautier’s Paul Gainer

Now signing day on the Coast wasn’t completely void of some drama as Gautier’s Paul Gainer let his decision come down to the wire.
In the end, the uncommitted offensive lineman chose Southern Miss after decomitting last month from Mississippi State where he had been committed to since April.
Gainer had other options like Memphis and Middle Tennessee, but he saw something special in the Black and Gold, just like they saw something special in him. Coach Jay Hopson said, “Paul was about 2:30, so again Paul is my guy. Paul and I, he’s special to me. We spent a lot of time together and just loved him to death, just glad to have him in the family. Paul is a guy that can play anything up front. He can play center, guard, tackle, just an extremely athletic, physical football player”
Gainer helps complete a class of 25 players at USM which is the maximum number of scholarships allotted per year.
