Funeral held for former Biloxi Chaplin and investigator Robert Burriss
A funeral was held today for former Biloxi Police investigator and Chaplain Robert Burriss.
Burriss died last week after battling cancer. Burriss joined the Biloxi Police Department in March 1978 as a patrolman and retired in April 2006 as an investigator. He then continued to serve with the department as chaplain until his death on December 29th.
Burriss also served in military law enforcement with the Air Force for 20 years before joining the Biloxi Police Department.
He received many awards in recognition of his knowledge and experience, including being named the Outstanding Law Enforcement Officer of the Year for Mississippi. Biloxi Police Chief John Miller said, “A guy like Robert doesn’t come along every day, so you know it’s gonna be a large hole to fill. Since ’06 after he retired, he came back as our chaplain, and so he’s counseled a lot of young officers and old officers too. Like I said, it’s going to be a large hole to fill. A guy like that is just hard to find.”
Burriss became recognized as one of the top crime scene investigators in the southeast and assisted numerous local, state, and federal agencies with case analysis.
