Mississippi Legislative Session to begin January 4th
Mississippi’s legislative session begins January 4th and it seems legislators have a lot to tackle this year.
One of the main points of discussion will be teacher pay. Representative Richard Bennett says he is hoping to raise the salary to the national average, but must first see what can be afforded by the tax payers.
Another main topic will be where education enhancement funds from lottery earnings go. Bennett is hoping to use some of the funds to extend pre-K programs across the state.
One more topic expected to receive a lot of attention is medical marijuana. Bennett believes the new bill will be sufficient enough for all parties to pass. “The Senate and the House have gotten together. We got a bill that we think is a good bill – a good medical marijuana bill. It’s as close to the initiative as the people voted on and as we could get it, and so we are looking forward to getting that passed and moved on to the governor’s desk.”
Governor Reeves said that the original bill allowed too much marijuana on the streets of Mississippi and would only sign one that is “truly medical marijuana.”
