Should Stores Open on Thanksgiving Day?
In what’s becoming a trend the last few years, many retail stores decided to open their doors on Thanksgiving Day. Large retail stores like Target, Wal-Mart, Toys ‘R’ Us, Best Buy and Macy’s decided to help shoppers get a jumpstart on their Black Friday shopping.
On the other hand, places like Edgewater Mall made a decision to keep their doors closed on Thanksgiving to allow employees valuable time with their family. For one woman who used to work in retail, she feels like that’s the right thing to do. Merri Hanes said, “I think it’s awful and I won’t be doing it. Before I had kids and my own family, I worked retail and we had to get up early in the morning the next day. Now that stores are open Thanksgiving Day, they have started to keep people away from their family the whole day. I don’t think that’s what the holiday is about.”
Instead of opening their doors on Thanksgiving, many large retailers had online doorbuster deals.
