High influenza activity in Mississippi

Flu season has arrived with the Centers for Disease Control reporting widespread activity in 36 states across the United States.
Mississippi is one of the 21 states to experience extremely high flu activity as the illness runs rampant. To make matters worse, this year’s vaccine does not seem to be a good match for the most common circulating strain. Most of the influenza specimens tested nationwide are influenza-A, usually believed to be the worse strand.
Local nurse practitioner Kimaka Brown tells News 25 she’s seen patients with both Influenza A&B and even some carrying both at the same time. “Here in the community of Gulfport at Orange Grove Urgent Care, we’ve seen multiple infestations of flu. We’ve had lots of A, lots of B. I can’t even say one is worse than the other. Like I said, I’ve had patients in families come back where one member of the house is positive for A, another member of the house is positive for B. That’s very tricky for the family.”
The CDC also reports that unlike strain B, the Influenza A virus can also affect many different animals including chickens, horses, and cats.
