Haunted Cemetery Tour

The Coast is rich in history. Some of that history is coming back to life at the Old Biloxi Cemetery tonight as the annual Haunted Tour wraps up.
As the sun sinks, the spirits rise at the Old Biloxi Cemetery. This is the norm every year as the city preps for Halloween with a haunted tour featuring ghostly spirits from the city’s past sharing their stories with the living. Kay Miller with the Preserve Biloxi Committee said, “This year is huge. We have re-enactments at 17 locations and we choose a theme each year. This year we’ve picked previous mayors. A lot of the previous mayors have a lot of interesting stories to tell.”
Ghost of Dr. Daniel A. Nash, the first doctor to be mayor, said, “I served for two years as mayor and very tragically my life was ended while cleaning a hunting rifle in 1904.”
Ghost of John Kennedy, ran the J.J. Kennedy Hotel before being elected mayor, said, “Ended up running for alderman, won that. Ran for City Council, won that. Ran for mayor and was one of the longest term mayors up until AJ Holloway.”
Ghost of John Walker, captained a steam boat before being elected mayor, said, “He also ran seven to eight businesses while being mayor so his life was very stressful. He was pretty much caring for her all by himself so it caused him to snap one day at the age of 73 and there was a murder-suicide.”
“We do two nights. We do the same tour. We do Sunday afternoon and then Tuesday night because there is such a huge response of people wanting to come. Some people come both times and get half of it in one night and half of it in the next. There’s lots of walking, but the cemetery is beautiful,” said Miller.
This is more than just a fun way to look at Biloxi’s past while celebrating the spirit of Halloween. These tours serve a bigger purpose for the city. “We ask for donations. With those donations we try to restore some of the cemetery tombs where the people have no more descendants that are here,” said Miller.
