69th annual Bernard Blackwell Classic: recruiting at a premium for uncommitted Coast players
The 69th annual Bernard Blackwell Classic is a reward for the 80 some odd players suiting up tomorrow at Milner Stadium in Gulfport, but it’s also a very important game for the collegiate hopefuls.
Players like East Central Tight end Brad Cumbest are good to go, having already committed to Mississippi State. Harrison Central Running back Keon Moore is heading the JUCO route with East Mississippi Community College.
St. Stanislaus Quarterback Jake Greer and some of the others are still diving head first in the recruiting process and tomorrow’s showcase could be their final selling point. Greer currently holds an offer from PRCC to play linebacker, but he says he wants to play QB at the next level.
South Head Coach Matt Caldwell said, “We’ve got a lot of them here, we’ve got kids from 1A to 6A and everywhere in between. And some of these guys have been flying under the radar because they might not have been playing at a big school and they have the opportunity this week to showcase their talent. And so it’s a big week for them.”
“It’s always been one of my goals since I was a kid, and I’ve kind of gotten overlooked throughout the years, but I feel like this game will help me out a little bit. Being able to throw to all these all-stars and help manage the offense, just show them that I can do it,” said Greer.
Greer took over for LSU Quarterback Myles Brennan for his senior season and led the Rock-A-Chaws to the second round of the playoffs.
