Stone Co. Dedicates Community Art Quilt

The Stone County community art quilt was dedicated Monday at the Stone County courthouse. Stone County High School students and community leaders came together to create the quilt that depicts the history of Stone County.

The students were inspired by the book, Fahrenheit 451, to create something to remember the importance of the story of their community. The quilt is the 32nd installment of a series of murals created to honor Stone County. Mississippi quilter, Diane Williams, conducted a day long workshop, mentoring the students and leaders, while Stone County High teacher, Emily Sumrall, worked closely with the kids throughout the process.

Sumrall says, "It’s basically their chance to be a piece of history because they didn’t really understand the importance of the community and being involved in the community and being responsible citizens. So this book really taught them how to be a responsible citizen and the importance of being involved in their community."

The quilt will be on display at the historic courthouse through mid-January, when it will travel to the Community Art Center and Stone County High School, until it returns back to its final home at the courthouse.
