Bernie Carbo opens up about Addiction
Boston Red Sox player Bernie Carbo may have hit a World Series homerun, but when it comes to life, the former major leaguer says he almost struck out.
Seats were full at the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum in Biloxi to listen to Carbo speak at the weekly baseball luncheon.
Carbo is a former left-handed hitter and outfielder who played for six teams, spending more than ten years with the MLB.
After hitting a home-run in the 1975 World Series, Carbo says instead of celebrating, his addiction with drugs and alcohol led him into depression, at one point attempting suicide. “I ended up in the hospital where a man told me about Jesus Christ. I went back into rehab, worked really hard and have been saved for about 23 years. I’ve been clean for 23 years. It’s a journey, but I go all over.”
Carbo says his faith saved his life and now he travels around sharing his story and teaching kids how to play baseball.
WXXV is a proud sponsor of the “Our Love Affair with Baseball” luncheon.
