Hurricane Katrina 11th Anniversary
Eleven years ago today, Hurricane Katrina made landfall on the Gulf Coast.
At 7:10 a.m. eastern on August 29th, 2005, Hurricane Katrina made landfall as a strong Category 3 hurricane in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi with sustained winds of more than 125 miles per hour.
The storm destroyed buildings and flooded thousands of homes in the region.
Hurricane Katrina was one of the costliest and deadliest storms to ever hit the United States. More than 1,200 people died in the storm and subsequent floods.
Executive Director of MEMA Lee Smithson said, “The great thing is, and I think it’s testament to the resilience of the people on the Coast, as well as the dedication of the leadership up in Jackson and Washington, D.C., is nobody died after the storm. So, nobody starved to death. Nobody went without medical care that caused them to die.”
Katrina left behind an estimated $75 billion worth of damages in New Orleans, Louisiana and along the Mississippi Coast.
