Department of Public Safety announces security staffing for LSU-Ole Miss game
OXFORD, Miss. — The Mississippi Department of Public Safety is preparing its largest Mississippi Highway Patrol presence to date for a college football weekend as thousands of fans travel to Oxford for the Ole Miss-LSU matchup.
Commissioner Sean Tindell announced Wednesday that approximately 65 to 70 MHP troopers and Commercial Transportation Enforcement Division officers are expected to be deployed in Oxford and around the University of Mississippi throughout the weekend.
Enhanced traffic enforcement will begin as early as Thursday and continue through the conclusion of the weekend.
In addition to the increased number of officers, MDPS will deploy its Special Operations Group, Air Operations and Mobile Command Center to support public safety efforts.
“This weekend will bring a significant number of visitors to Oxford, and our priority is making sure everyone can enjoy the game and surrounding events safely,” Tindell said.
MDPS is coordinating its operations with the University of Mississippi Police Department and Oxford Police Department, including traffic management and other public safety efforts.
Louisiana State Police will also assist with the operation. MDPS says approximately 10 to 15 Louisiana troopers are expected to work alongside Mississippi law enforcement during the weekend.
The department says it routinely coordinates with visiting teams and their protective details to help provide safe and efficient travel and operations.
Officials are warning motorists to prepare for significantly increased traffic in and around Oxford. Those traveling to the game and related events are encouraged to allow additional travel time, remain patient, avoid distracted or impaired driving and follow directions from law enforcement officers managing traffic.
MDPS says the increased presence is intended to provide a safe environment for fans, students, residents and visitors throughout the Ole Miss-LSU weekend.
