Ole Miss Defeats Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl

This past Saturday, Ole Miss and Mississippi State met on the football field for the 111th time. This year, it would be the Rebels putting an end to any chance of a national championship for the Bulldogs. The Egg Bowl trophy was held proudly by Ole Miss players after a hard fought win over Mississippi State, a win that will keep the trophy in Oxford for at least the next year.

Ole Miss used big plays to take a bite out of the Bulldogs. Jaylen Walton took off on a 91 yard touchdown run in the 3rd quarter to give the Rebels a 24 to 10 lead. The lack of a good defensive plan was not lost on State Head Coach, Dan Mullen. Mullen says, "I think we’re giving up 20 yards or something per play. That’s just absolutely pathetic, terrible job by our defensive coaching staff. Not a great job on offense. We gotta’ score there at the end and find a way to punch the ball in. At the end with those last couple possessions, we had opportunities to come back and make play to go win it, and we didn’t make the plays."

In the 4th quarter, Bulldogs Quarterback, Dak Prescott, hit De’Runnya Wilson for a touchdown and State trailed 24 to 17. Prescott threw for 282 yards, but it was Ole Miss Quarterback, Bo Wallace, who stole the show. Playing on an injured ankle, the senior threw for 296 yards. Last year, Wallace fumbled in the Egg Bowl. Wallace says he thought about the loss for 365 days and it was redemption time. Wallace says, "We have the Egg Bowl back and to go out as a senior with the Egg Bowl is something special and to make sure they don’t get the chance to play for a national title is something else that makes it even greater.”

It was a trick play in the 4th quarter that sealed the win for Ole Miss. Cody Core hit Jordan Wilkins for a touchdown, giving the Rebels a 14 point lead. The final score: Ole Miss – 31, Mississippi State – 17. Ole Miss Running Back, Jordan Wilkins, says, "I’m not even from this state, but this is the biggest rivalry in the country, no doubt, just all the hate and all the smack talk and the nonsense, but it was definitely in the back of our minds to be the spoiler on their big season."

This coming Sunday, December 7th, Ole Miss and Mississippi State will find out what bowl games they are headed to.
