Stray Animals Once Again to be Brought to H.S.S.M.

After lengthy negotiations, the City of Gulfport and the Humane Society of South Mississippi (H.S.S.M.) have finally reached an agreement regarding the care of stray animals within city limits.

The new three year contract, the longest ever between the two parties, states the city will pay H.S.S.M. $175,000 per year to care for the stray animals brought in.

Krystyna Schmitt, Marketing Specialist for H.S.S.M., says, “We are really excited because there are several ordinances that will help us eliminate unnecessary euthanasia, while reducing cost involved with those animals. So we are very excited about this new partnership between the city and ourselves.”

While H.S.S.M. expects the first year to be a loss, several new ordinances are in the works that will help offset the cost of the animals’ care. One of the new ordinances will return stray cats to the area they were found after being fixed and vaccinated.
