NAACP to hold press conference in Jackson today

JACKSON, Miss. (WXXV) – The NAACP is set to hold a press conference Sunday afternoon in Jackson as election officials across Mississippi continue counting and certifying ballots following this week’s closely watched election.

The organization says the event comes after it sent a public letter to county election commissioners urging them to follow all legal procedures during the ballot counting, canvassing, and certification process.

NAACP leaders say they are concerned about what they describe as increasing pressure on election officials responsible for completing the state’s vote count. During Sunday’s news conference, officials are expected to call for election workers and commissioners to be allowed to carry out their duties without political interference.

“Mississippi voters did their part. They registered, voted, and made their voices heard,” said NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson. “Now election officials must follow the law and ensure every eligible vote is counted.”

Scheduled speakers include Johnson, NAACP Mississippi State Conference Executive Director Charles Taylor, and other NAACP staff and volunteers.

The press conference is scheduled for 4 p.m. Sunday at the NAACP Mississippi State Conference Office on West Lynch Street in Jackson.

Election officials across Mississippi are continuing the certification process as final results are reviewed and outstanding ballots are processed according to state law.
