Ty Pinkins’ vote share could decide tight Mississippi Senate race

MISS, (CNN/WXXV) – As Mississippi’s U.S. Senate race remains extremely close between incumbent Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith and Democratic challenger Scott Colom, attention is also turning to independent candidate Ty Pinkins.

Pinkins has received roughly 2% of the vote in the race, a small share that could carry added significance as Hyde-Smith and Colom remain locked in a tight contest.

While Pinkins is not in contention to win the seat, political analysts note that independent candidates can play a role in close elections, particularly when the margin between the leading candidates is narrow.

Speaking about the race, Pinkins addressed his campaign, his message to voters and the role he believes independent candidates can play in Mississippi politics.

With vote counting continuing across the state, the contest between Hyde-Smith and Colom remains one of the closest races on Mississippi’s ballot.
