MSDH spreads awareness for National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week

October 25th through the 31st is National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week. The State Department of Health is encouraging parents to get their children and homes tested for the toxic metal.

Children can be exposed to lead from several sources, being at higher risk if they live in older homes that contact lead pipes and mini-blinds that have peeling paint.

Other sources of lead include soil, dust, tap water, and certain paints.

Also included are electrical cords, garden hoses, and outside water faucets.

The department of health says the effects of lead exposure are irreversible so preventing exposure is critical.
