MBI investigating officer-involved shooting in Claiborne County; Deputy killed
Claiborne County, Miss. (WXXV) — The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting involving the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Office near Hermanville that left a deputy dead and a bystander injured.
According to MBI, deputies were attempting to disperse a crowd in the parking lot of Michael Dean’s Convenience Store around midnight when gunfire was directed toward the crowd.
During the incident, a female bystander was struck by gunfire and transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
A Claiborne County Sheriff’s deputy was also shot and taken to a local hospital, where the deputy later died from their injuries.
MBI agents are currently assessing the incident and collecting evidence as part of their investigation.
Once the investigation is complete, MBI will submit its findings to the local District Attorney’s Office and the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office for review.
Officials say the information released so far is preliminary and subject to change as the investigation continues.
