No signs of the heat letting up this week

Meteorologist Sam Lucey has a look at the forecast for south Mississippi

Tonight will offer little relief from the heat. Skies will be partly cloudy with temperatures settling into the upper 70s. Winds will remain light, shifting from south to west overnight.

Thursday will be another mostly sunny and hot day, with highs near 96 degrees. An isolated shower or thunderstorm could develop during the afternoon, but most locations will likely remain dry. Heat index values could reach as high as 109 degrees.

Storm chances increase Friday

Friday looks to bring the best chance for afternoon thunderstorms through the end of the workweek. A 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms is expected after 1 PM, although storms will remain scattered rather than widespread. Temperatures will still climb to around 96 degrees, with heat index values approaching 110.

A few storms could linger into Friday evening before activity gradually decreases overnight.

Saturday will remain hot, with mostly sunny skies and highs around 95. There will be another small chance for an afternoon shower or thunderstorm, but most of the area should stay dry. Sunday could be the hottest day of the weekend, with mostly sunny skies and temperatures reaching the upper 90s.

More heat early next week

The persistent heat continues into Monday and Tuesday, with highs remaining near 96 degrees. Afternoon and evening shower and thunderstorm chances become a little more noticeable, but there are no signs of a widespread rain event at this time.

By Wednesday, temperatures are still expected to remain in the mid-90s, with another chance for showers and thunderstorms.

The repeated days of temperatures in the 90s combined with high humidity will continue to put stress on the body, particularly during the afternoon. Take frequent breaks from the heat, stay hydrated, and don’t underestimate how quickly conditions can become dangerous outdoors.
