Dangerous heat expected this weekend
Meteorologist Sam Lucey has a look at the forecast for south Mississippi
South Mississippi is in for a pretty hot weekend, with temperatures climbing into the upper 90s and heat index values reaching potentially dangerous levels.
An Extreme Heat Warning is in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday as temperatures climb to around 98 degrees, but it will feel as hot as 112 degrees at times. Skies will remain mostly sunny, with only a slight chance for a brief shower or thunderstorm Saturday afternoon.
For Sunday, we have an Extreme Heat Watch in effect, with afternoon highs near 97 degrees and heat index values reaching around 110 degrees.
Unfortunately, there isn’t much relief in sight. Highs will remain in the upper 90s through much of next week, with afternoon heat continuing to feel close to or above 100 degrees.
A few isolated showers and thunderstorms will be possible during the afternoons, but most of the time will be hot and sunny.
If you’re going to be outside this weekend, take the heat and recognize the signs of heat exhaustion before it leads to heat stroke.
Heat Exhaustion:
- Heavy sweating
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Weakness or fatigue
- Nausea or vomiting
- Cool, pale, clammy skin
Heat Stroke:
- Confusion or altered mental state
- Loss of consciousness
- Seizures
- Very high body temperature
- Hot skin with a rapid pulse
Stay hydrated, take frequent breaks from the heat and minimize strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day (11am-4pm).
