Hot weekend on tap with a few storms possible

Meteorologist Sam Lucey has a look at the week ahead

After a mostly clear night with lows in the upper 70s, Saturday will be sunny, hot, and humid. Highs will reach around 99 degrees, with the heat index making it feel closer to 111 degrees during the afternoon. A few showers and thunderstorms will be possible late in the day, mainly after 3 PM, but most locations will stay dry.

Sunday looks very similar with another hot and mostly sunny day. Highs will again be near 100 with heat index values around 111 degrees. A few isolated storms could pop up during the afternoon and evening.

A weak area of disturbed weather tied to an upper-level low and a surface trough producing showers and thunderstorms across the eastern Gulf and parts of Florida. Some slow development is possible as the system drifts northward over the next several days. The main concern will likely be heavy rainfall along portions of the Florida west coast, but we could see additional scattered storms because of this area of disturbed weather.

The National Hurricane Center gives this system a:

  • 10% chance of development over the next 48 hours
  • 30% chance of development over the next 7 days

For the Mississippi Gulf Coast, this system is not expected to have a direct impact at this time, but it is something we will continue to monitor.

Rain chances increase slightly early next week. Monday brings the best chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms, with a 50% chance of rain after 1 PM. Temperatures will still remain hot, with highs in the upper 90s.

The rest of the week stays locked into a typical summer pattern: hot afternoons, humid conditions, and daily chances for isolated showers and thunderstorms. Highs will remain in the mid to upper 90s through Friday, with overnight lows staying in the upper 70s.
