Gulfport councilwoman honored

Gulfport Councilwoman Ella Holmes-Hines will be inducted into the Mississippi Municipal Hall of Fame Wednesday.
She will be honored for her 20 years of public service during a ceremony tomorrow at the annual Mississippi Municipal League Conference happening this week at the Coast Coliseum. The ward 3 councilwoman was not only the first African American elected in the City of Gulfport, but also the first woman.
Holmes-Hines says she’s humbled to receive this honor. She tells News 25 getting $18 million into the Bayou View West area after severe hurricane damage is one of many accomplishments she’s most proud of. “When I came in, those citizens had endured about five storm surges and when you fast forward we’re now trying to do another highlight where we are looking at all of this that we’re wearing today for the Mississippi Aquarium which is another highlight. When you do parks and projects for roads, streets, and drainage that gives you a lot of support.”
Holmes-Hines is also the longest elected public official in the City of Gulfport.
