MBI investigating officer-involved shooting in Simpson County

MENDENHALL, Miss. (WXXV) — The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened Wednesday in Simpson County.

Deputies were called to a home on Blair Road in Mendenhall to conduct a welfare check. When they arrived, they discovered a burglary in progress inside the residence.

Authorities say a juvenile suspect fired a weapon at deputies, striking one officer. The suspect then barricaded himself inside the home, leading deputies to return fire.

The situation escalated into a standoff as multiple law enforcement agencies responded to assist. Officials say tear gas was eventually deployed inside the home. The suspect then fled on foot and fired again toward officers, prompting a state trooper to shoot the individual.

The juvenile was taken into custody and transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The injured deputy also suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

When officers entered the home, two individuals were found deceased inside. Their identities have not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin.

The investigation is ongoing, and officials say information remains preliminary and subject to change.
