Memorial Day Traffic
Memorial Day Weekend is upon us and that means folks around the country will bring out the grills and hit the beaches to celebrate.
Along with beach trips, barbeques and vacations, it marks the start of the worst season for traffic fatalities. There are ways you can stay safe this holiday weekend.
Mississippi Highway Patrol Trooper Chase Elkins tells News 25 that extra patrolmen will be on the highway. There will be checkpoints to ensure drivers are being cautious on the roadways of South Mississippi. “We need to keep people off their cellphones. Their eyes need to be on the road if they’re behind the wheel of a vehicle. All occupants inside the vehicle need to have their seat belt or child restraints on. The child restraints need to be buckled properly. That’s a big problem that we run into out here on the road is they have one or two straps together and they think that’s safe but the seats are made for a reason the way that they are,” said Elkins.
Elkins says highway patrol is expecting heavy traffic this weekend, not just because it’s Memorial Day but it’s also the first weekend school is out and gas prices are currently down.
