Local bunny rescue says bunnies gifted during Easter often dumped weeks later
SAUCIER, Miss. (WXXV) — Easter has since passed, but bunnies given as gifts for the holiday may soon end up on the streets.
Every year around easter, rabbits are often given as gifts, but as they grow and require more care, many are later released outside, where they are unlikely to survive.
In Saucier, Lola and Friends Bunny Rescue of South Mississippi is caring for more than 100 domestic rabbits–each one rescued after being abandoned outdoors or left to fend for itself.
Rescue owners Sherri and James Johnson say this heartbreaking cycle can be prevented with better education and awareness before people choose to bring a bunny home.
What people may not know is a bunny has the same lifespan as a dog – around 10-15 years. They can not survive out on their own like wild rabbits, as domesticated bunnies have different appetites. But, one of the most important things to remember is that bunnies are extremely fertile and must be spayed and neutered.
The rabbits at Lola and Friends Bunny Rescue are available for adoption or foster, and Sherri and James are always happy to provide guidance and answer any questions about proper rabbit care.
