Hancock County bed build and bedding drive aims to help children without beds
HANCOCK COUNTY, Miss. (WXXV)- Every child deserves a bed of their own. That’s the goal of a local bed build and donation drive aimed at helping children in need across Hancock County.
The Hancock County Library System is partnering with the Rotary Club of Bay St. Louis, Rotary District 6840, and Sleep in Heavenly Peace for an upcoming bed build.
Volunteers will be building beds for children who don’t have one of their own. You can help, simply by donating new twin-size bedding sheets, blankets, and pillows through September 11. Hancock County Library System Executive Director John Brdecka said, “The Rotary District 6840 which serves Louisiana and South Mississippi is coming together to do one large service project across the coast. On Saturday September 19th, we will be working with Sleep in Heavenly Peace, which is a 501c3 out of Ocean Springs. Their mission is to provide beds for children who normally don’t have beds and are sleeping on couches or floors or things of that nature. Saturday, September 19th is the build; the bedding drive will go through September 11th and then we’ll take all the bedding to the build on September 19th and provide it to Sleep in Heavenly Peace. They do have an Amazon wish list link. So, any of those who doesn’t get a chance to make it to the library branch and drop off bedding, they can go online and order the sheets for Sleep in Heavenly Peace.”
Donation boxes are now available at all five Hancock County Library branches. Organizers says something as simple as a set of sheets, a blanket, or a pillow can help give a child a safe and comfortable place to sleep. “Children are our future and for their future, the most important thing is their education and health. So, getting a good night sleep starts the next day with them getting ready to learn in the classroom. Education is first and foremost. In order to have a good education, you need to have a good place to sleep and lay your head. If a child needs a bed they can go to Sleep in Heavenly Peace’s website and they can apply for a bed. Thanks to South Group Insurance. They kicked off this bedding drive at our library systems in Hancock County and they donated the 10 sets of twin sheets and we’re very grateful for them to kick this off.”
