New Rainbow Bridge Pet Memorial in Picayune

ROY HOWARD COMMUNITY JOURNALISM CENTER-A new memorial in Picayune is giving residents a place to remember beloved pets.

The Rainbow Bridge Pet Memorial is inspired by the ‘Rainbow Bridge’ poem which is often shared by grieving pet owners.

Visitors can clip a pet’s collar or keepsakes to the cable along the bridge.

Memorial tags are also available for purchase with proceeds benefiting the Pearl River County Society of the Prevention of Cruelty to animals.

The memorial was created though a collaboration among eleven community groups, including local artists, civic organizations, and the city.

Rebecca Dickerson with the Greater Picayune Area Chamber of Commerce says the project reflects the community’s spirit. “The fact that we had so many different organizations come together, it’s a testament to the spirit of the community. So even though it does represent the pets, it also represents what our community can come together and do.”

Statues, bird baths, birdhouses, and painted brick pavers surround the bridge, many donated by local artists and community groups.
