Coast churches prepare for Ash Wednesday

Now that carnival is over, many South Mississippians are looking ahead to the season of Lent.

Many churches tomorrow will offer Ash Wednesday masses or services to distribute ashes and start the 40 days of Lent, preceding Easter.

Ashes are a symbol of repentance and our own mortality.

The distribution of ashes is practiced by many Christian denominations.
