Gulfport waives late fees on water and utility bills through November
GULFPORT, Miss. (WXXV) — As of November 5, residents of Gulfport will not be charged late fees on water and sewer utility bills for the month of November.
This relief is thanks to a unanimous vote by the city council to wave the fees, which run $35 to $40. This temporary resolution is in response to the ongoing government shutdown and cuts to SNAP benefits.
This applies to residential and commercial customers, and though this is temporary and only for the month of November, Councilwoman Carrissa Corbett says the topic could be back on the table for December if the shutdown continues.
“In recognition of the financial hardship many of our residents and business owners are facing due to the federal government shutdown, which began October 1, 2025, the City Council has taken action to provide meaningful relief,” said Mayor Hugh D. Keating. “This unanimous decision reflects our commitment to supporting our community during challenging times.”
Councilwoman Corbett also said in a statement that this small cut could help Gulfport residents put food on their tables.
“With many families facing furloughs, reduced hours, delayed pay, and less food assistance, this measure is intended to provide a relief and help residents maintain essential water services during the period of uncertainty,” said Corbett. “During this shutdown, families are not choosing to fall behind. They are being forced into tough decisions. We are giving Gulfport families breathing room to keep them from falling further in financial hardships.”
The resolution will expire on November 30, and customers who do not pay their water and sewer bills could still be at risk of their water being shut off according to the city’s standard policies.
