Youth crime concerns in Gulfport: State Rep. Jeffrey Hulum discusses with WXXV

GULFPORT, Miss. (WXXV) – In recent news in the City of Gulfport, several teens have been linked to criminal activity over the past few months. Just two weeks ago, the community held a “Night out Against Crime,” an event aimed at promoting safety and reducing crime in the area. Among those in attendance was State Representative Jeffery Hullum, who spoke passionately about encouraging Gulfport’s youth to make better life choices.

Hullum said that if local youth had more programs and positive activities available, they would be less likely to turn to crime or other harmful ways of spending their time. He noted that West Gulfport, in particular, lacks resources for young people, making it harder for them to focus on positive, age-appropriate activities.

A probable solution to deter youth from crime may be investing in more youth programs and community resources is key to steering teens away from crime and toward brighter futures. He said creating safe, positive outlets for young people will not only benefit families but also strengthen the Gulfport community as a whole.

This story comes just a week after a 15-year-old student in Gulfport was arrested and charged with one count of possession of a handgun on school property and one count of shooting at a vehicle. He was later transported to the Harrison County Adult Detention Center and held in lieu of a $1,000,000 bond.
