Maroon Tide football duo commits to two different SEC Teams!

The fireworks came early at Friendship Park as two Picayune standouts announced their college commitments. The recruitment journey has been an intense one for four-star edge Nolan Wilson and three-star offensive lineman Mitchell Smith and they’re ready to make things official.

Starting us off is the State Champion. Mitchell Smith has made his commitment to Vanderbilt University!

“It felt like a family,” said Mitchell Smith. “I loved everyone there, especially the coaching staff. It felt like home and it felt like they had mentors that could teach me and develop me as a young man.

Closing us out is a quarterback’s worst nightmare. From the Maroon Tide to the Crimson Tide,  Nolan Wilson is headed to the University of Alabama!

“For Alabama to be my first offer, I’m pretty sure that helped them so much. They trusted me, so I’ve got to trust in them now,” said Nolan Wilson. “It really feels good. There’s a special place in my heart for them being my first offer to them beginning my real football season.”

The two will be friendly foes in the SEC, but being on opposite sides of the ball is nothing new. Both Smith and Wilson discussed the advantages of competing against one another each and every day.

“My coaches everyday say iron sharpens iron,” Wilson said. “Going against Mitch was probably one of my first plays ever in football, so I’ve got to give it up to him because he really helps me. If I wasn’t going against Mitch almost everyday, I wouldn’t be where I am now and wouldn’t be used to going against such good competitors .”

“I think it gives me a big advantage honestly,” Smith said. “He’s an SEC player and I’m an SEC player, so just going head to head, iron sharpens iron. It says it in the Bible. Getting me better gets him better and could give us the opportunity to play as freshmen.”

Lucky for the Maroon Tide, they aren’t splitting ways yet and they’re not stopping until they bring another gold ball to the City of Picayune. We look forward to continuing our coverage of this duo during their senior seasons!
