Update on Popp’s Ferry Road extension

BILOXI, Miss. (WXXV)- A long awaited road project in Biloxi is underway and it’s paving the way for even bigger improvements.

Back in November 2024, work officially began on the $20.8 million Popp’s Ferry Extension Project.

The extension will create a new four-lane roadway stretching 1.53 miles from north of Pass Road all the way to Highway 90, giving drivers a direct route across Biloxi.

Neel-Schaffer is leading design and engineering, while Necaise Brothers Contracting handles construction.

Crews have already removed underground infrastructure and are building a tunnel foundation to connect parking lots on both sides of the road.

But that’s not all, this extension also lays the groundwork for funding a new Popp’s Ferry Bridge.

By connecting Popp’s Ferry to a major highway, the route could earn state road status, opening the door to more funding down the line.

Meanwhile, a separate $15 million project is in the planning stages to replace the draw span on the 45-year-old bridge.

Thanks to a $12 million MDOT grant and a $3 million city match, the work will include major upgrades to the mechanical system, reducing malfunctions and extending the bridge’s life.

Completion for the road extension is expected by the end of 2026.
