Senator Hyde-Smith reintroduces Rural Health Sustainability Act

U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde Smith reintroduced her legislation to restore emergency care services to rural hospitals.

The Rural Health Sustainability Act would help make more at-risk or closed rural hospitals eligible for the CMS program to reestablish or maintain services.

This act would extend the application eligibility which would open the door for rural facilities closed since 2014 to apply for rural emergency hospital designation.

Senator Hyde-Smith had this to say following this move to reintroduce the act. “A rural hospital with an REH designation means that there is a greater chance that lives can be saved. This is a good program, but it can be improved by recognizing the rural hospital closure crisis began long before 2020 and that bureaucratic definitions inhibit too many rural communities from maintaining or restoring life-saving emergency care. This bill would remedy these shortcomings.”

This is an act which Hyde-Smith initially introduced in the 118th Congress.
