State Senators Want to Redo Flood Maps

Members of the Coast delegation are trying to do their part to lower flood insurance rates.
State Senator Sean Tindell and others are leading a charge to change FEMA flood maps for the Coast. The charge started as a bill that died in Jackson, but now Tindell and others are taking it upon themselves.
Redoing those maps designating flood risk areas will be no easy task. Engineers would need to come in to survey the area to reanalyze Coast flood zones, hopefully leading to lowering the area’s base flood elevation.
Senator Sean Tindell said, “First we’re going to get the funding, which most of the Coast cities have passed the resolution in support of the legislation. So the funding has been allocated. So once that’s done, South Mississippi Planning Commission is going to work on getting the RFP done and securing the engineering firm to do the work. Then we have to get with the folks at FEMA and DC to make sure they’re supportive of the changes to make sure that they concur with what the engineering firm presents.”
Tindell tells News 25 the entire process will hopefully only take two to four years.
