Statement from Bishop Louis F. Kihneman III on the Election of Pope Leo XIV
Cardinal Robert Prevost, an American missionary who spent his career ministering in Peru and leads the Vatican’s powerful office of bishops, was elected the first American pope in the 2,000-year history of the Catholic Church.
Prevost, 69, took the name Leo XIV.
Bishop of Biloxi Louis F. Kihneman III has released a statement on the election of the new Pope. “With deep gratitude to God and great joy in my heart, I join the faithful of the Diocese of Biloxi and the entire Catholic Church in welcoming the election of our new Holy Father, Robert Cardinal Prevost, who has chosen the name Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope.”
“The Holy Spirit continues to guide and sustain the Church through the gift of the papacy, and we give thanks for this new successor of St. Peter, who now steps forward to shepherd the People of God in truth, unity, and love.”
“Throughout my life and priesthood, I have been profoundly shaped by the witness and leadership of the popes who have gone before.”
“From Pope Pius XII in my early childhood, to the pastoral care of Pope St. John XXIII and the theological depth of Pope Paul VI, the Church has walked a journey of renewal and faithfulness. I served as a priest during the dynamic and transformative papacy of Pope St. John Paul II, who inspired generations with his courage, intellect, and deep love for Christ and His Church.”
“Pope Benedict XVI offered the Church a brilliant mind and humble heart, and Pope Francis, who called me to be bishop, has called us all to a renewed encounter with mercy, simplicity, and missionary discipleship.”
“As we now welcome our new Holy Father, I invite all the faithful of our diocese to pray fervently for him. May he be blessed with strength, wisdom, and a heart molded after the Good Shepherd.”
“Let us walk with him in faith and unity, trusting always in the Lord who never ceases to provide for His Church.”
