Early morning apartment fire in Gulfport

Gulfport firefighters battled heavy smoke this morning at an apartment complex in Gulfport.
About 25 residents in the Mississippi Avenue Apartments were evacuated around 4:45 this morning after reports of a fire. Over a dozen Gulfport firefighters worked to extinguish the flames and control the heavy smoke. The room where officials believe the fire began was vacant. There were no injuries reported.
Evacuated resident Denise Smith said, “I woke up about 4:30 this morning, went to the bathroom, heard the fire trucks, and about ten minutes later the fire department came and knocked on the door, told us we had to evacuate.”
Gulfport Fire Department District Chief Mike Bond said, “Interior crew got in, had a quick knock down, able to confine it just to the one room, as far as I know nobody got hurt. Everybody was out.”
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
