Mammoth teeth fossils found on Mississippi beach
Gulf Coast, Miss. (WXXV)-Back in August 2024, a mammoth tusk was found in a creek in Central Mississippi.
Gulf Coast resident Cole Moody has found parts of a mammoth’s tooth, the first report of a Columbian Mammoth on the coast.
Moody was wading through the water at the beach during low tide when he made the discovery.
The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality confirming and documenting the finding, making this the second case of a mammoth in the Gulf Coast region.
These discoveries give state geologists a better understanding of the Ice Age landscape under the Mississippi Sound and Gulf of Mexico.
“The site has fossils that we know about already. I try to get out there when I can on my work schedule. So I was out there looking for fossils, I came across one I didn’t recognize. Once I found it, I posted it on the forums to get an idea of what it was and someone suggested mammoth. That’s when I immediately texted a picture to James and he said that looks like a mammoth. He was kind of, couldn’t believe it you know?”
Moody saying mammoth and other Ice Age discoveries are usually found in Florida and Texas.
The fossils are currently in the state’s Museum of Natural Science’s collection for further study.
