Memorial Hospital is now home to Select Specialty Hospital
In Gulfport, Memorial Hospital is now home to critical illness recovery hospital Select Specialty.
Memorial now has a hospital within a hospital. Select Specialty Hospital, from across the street, found a new home on the third floor of the C and D Wing.
The critical illness recovery hospital will have a newly renovated space to care for up to 36 patients. Select Specialty Hospital CEO John O’Keefe said, “It’s no small feat to move a hospital from one location to another even if it’s just across the street.”
The plan and renovation to the third floor was all organized by Select Hospital. “From everything, from design to build out, to achieving all the regulatory compliance benchmarks.”
On Tuesday, May 18th patients moved into their new rooms. Clinical Liaison Jody Petersen said, “These patients coming in will be the very first ones in these rooms so I’m sure they’ll be happy about that.”
Specialty Hospitals has been especially important during the pandemic. Over the past 14 months, their hospitals have played a vital role in the care of COVID-19 patients.
New equipment has been put in place to take care of their long-term patients, like telemetry systems able to monitor patients, heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels.
The move into Memorial will require less stress on long-term care patients. “We’ll have more options available, more physicians who can come and see our patients. It will be easier to get some of the tests done that patients sometimes need.”
Patient care is the first priority for Select employees. “I feel like it would be much easier for patients to come here and transfer. I know Memorial Hospital is really happy about the ease of transition.”
