Mississippi Bill to allow wine shipment to residents passes Senate
Mississippi is one of only three states that still prohibit direct wine shipments to residents. Many residents have been bypassing the restriction by traveling to neighboring states to receive shipped wine. After years of debate, the issue is now closer to resolution. If Governor Reeves signs the legislation into law, it will impose a 15.5% tax on direct wine shipments and limit individuals to ordering a maximum of 12 cases per year.
The bill is not expected to impact local businesses, as it only applies to wines that are unavailable in Mississippi. This legislation would give residents access to specialty and rare wines that cannot be purchased at local package stores.
Currently, anyone in Mississippi who wants wine shipped directly to their home must first obtain a permit from the Mississippi Department of Revenue. If the bill passes it will take effect on July 1.
