MGCCC and Memorial Hospital partnering for scholarship for medical students
Connecting business, industry, and education, Memorial Hospital has extended their partnership with MGCCC’s nursing program.
The number one ranked nursing program and community college in Mississippi has extended their partnership with Memorial Hospital, offering students a new wave of training.
MGCCC President Dr. Mary Graham tells News 25 this new scholarship opportunity is a 123 punch that’s very beneficial for students. “They’ll get on the job experience. They’ll get their classroom education paid for and they’ll also have a job waiting for them once they complete their credential in nursing.”
The Memorial Hospital at Gulfport Scholarship Fund applications can be found on the MGCCC Alumni Scholarship webpage. The deadline to turn in applications is March 31st. “If people are unsure as to what they want to major in and they’re thinking about healthcare, this is certainly a great opportunity.”
Due to the pandemic and state shortage of healthcare workers, a partnership deal that usually takes years to finalize was done in six to eight months. Memorial Hospital at Gulfport President Kent Nicaud said, “During COVID-19 the stressor it created on the healthcare industry was just amazing.”
One of the goals for MGCCC and Memorial Hospital is to keep local students employed in local Mississippi hospitals. “I don’t like seeing care leave our state. I don’t like seeing our employees or our community leave our state.”
Memorial has no limit to the number of scholarships given per semester. “Dr. Graham and her team may put a limit on it, but Memorial has not put a limit on it.”
Memorial is supporting MGCCC’s eight different medical affiliations helping to provide bedside care in hospitals and in nursing homes.
Recipients will be required to make a commitment of up to two years working for Memorial after graduating.
