Gulfport Fire Department battled a house fire Wednesday morning on Creel Circle.

Fire Chief Billy Kelley said firefighters could see heavy black smoke as they approached the residence and about half the home was fully engulfed.

Gulfport got the call about 11:39 a.m. and were able to get the fire under control quickly.

The homeowner was not in the house but a big dog died in the fire. Kelley said he was unsure of the breed.

The cause is under investigation.
