Introducing our WXXV Student Athlete of the Week: Pascagoula’s Silas Corder!

If there was a quarterback record at Pascagoula High School, odds are our student athlete has already broken it. If there’s one that hasn’t been touched in a while, just give him some time and I’m sure it won’t last long. Introducing the hard worker and pace setter, Pascagoula’s very own Silas Corder.

Last Friday may have been Pascagoula football’s bye week, but there’s truly never been a moment that panther Silas Corder wasn’t thinking about the game. In fact, he’s convinced he came out of the womb loving football and enjoying it with his father.

“We’d watch football every Saturday and every Sunday. Ever since I was little, all I remember was that I loved football and it was my favorite thing,” said Panther senior Silas Corder.

Those years on the gridiron now playing off, as Corder now serves the Panther football program as their starting quarterback, and was recently named a Bernard Blackwell All-Star. Not only does the 3-star lead the panther offense, but he also leads in the record books.

As a junior, he broke the school’s all-time career passing touchdown record, which was held by Shane Matthews in 1987. Just last month, Corder broke the all-time career passing attempts and completions, and single game passing attempts and completions in the same game. He went 27 for 43 with 371 yards and two touchdowns in the air. Corder considers it both an honor and a privilege to be a part of blue and red history.

“There’s a lot of history here,” said Corder. “Having the ability to be a part of it is just awesome. I don’t think I’ve ever missed a game since I was little, so just being here now and being a senior it’s pretty cool.”

Corder went on to say he believes he had so much success his senior year because he is comfortable in his own skin and is simply having fun. He owes the comfort and enjoyment to his teammates and coaches that surround him.

“I will say that in the years before I’ve been uptight and pretty nervous, but this year I’ve just been relaxed and happy,” said Corder. “It’s my senior year like I said and I’ve got guys behind me and my coaches and I can just feel free, be loose, and have fun. Having the threats of Duke and DJ on the outside (#13 and #14) and Chris Campbell and Jahkobian Maye, it’s just awesome. They are electric and I can trust where they’re going to be. I know they’re going to be in their routes and it’s fun to have them.”

The fun won’t stop once this season is complete. This past summer, Corder announced his commitment to the University of Southern Mississippi, which just so happens to be the program he grew up supporting and whose field he grew up playing on.

“They’ve been interested for a long time and of course I have been. It’s my lifelong team with my mom and dad going there and I’ve lived on campus when I was little. I love Coach Hall, Coach Stringer, and Coach Jack and it’s pretty cool,” Corder said. “Having the chance to go out there and play is really awesome.”

But it’s not quite time to put on the black and gold just yet, as Corder and the Panthers have some unfinished business to take care of for the 2024 season.

“The one thing on our minds is State Championship ball. The way we get there is winning every single week, so we’re approaching every single week like it’s that State Championship game and we’ll see where we get,” said Corder. “Don’t count Goula out! A lot of people look down on us. The past couple of years have been a little rocky and I think this year is the year.”

The next thing on their agenda is district play, as the Panthers hit the road to face Picayune on October 11th. Best of luck to Silas and the rest of the Panther program!
