Pascagoula approves project to expand Bayside Village
The Pascagoula City Council approved a special use permit with a variance to renovate the science building at the Old Pascagoula High School into 20 senior living apartments in the downtown district.
The Council voted 6-1 to approve the request, with Mayor Jay Willis dissenting.
City officials said when the request came in initially, the City Council had questions about the project at Bayside Village on Dupont Avenue and requested a walk-through to get a better understanding of what the special use permit would do.
Councilman Matt Parker said his concerns were answered during the walk-through, although he said he did want to see the auditorium renovated and refurbished. Parker said he understands Steve Naill, the owner, it trying to secure financing for that project.
Once that was done, the council was in agreement to approve the project — except Willis.
“I serve as mayor solely to make this town where I was raised, my children were raised, and my grandchildren are being raised, the very best it can be,” Willis said. “Over the years, many residents have had concerns about their apartments there. I believe that expanding the footprint of a building that has not been well-maintained in the past goes against our desire to make Pascagoula a better place for everyone.
“We welcome more quality senior housing in our city, but this project is not acceptable, in my opinion.”
However, the project will move forward with the additional apartments at Bayside Village.
