31 murals gives Stone County the nickname “The County of Murals”

We’re highlighting one of our South Mississippi counties known across the state as “The County of Murals.”

A total of 31 can be found in Stone County, including six in Blaylock Park in Wiggins.

The artwork showcases historic events and even famous faces from around the county.

Layla Essary, the executive director of Stone County’s Economic Development Partnership, tells more about how the murals came to be.

“These murals were created as mosaics from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College art students and their teachers as a way of pulling together imagery, people, and important industries from across the county,” said Essary. “We’ve had them for about 25 years now. They are beautiful and are the crown jewel of our downtown park at Blaylock.”

Next time you’re out and about, keep your eyes open for them!
